Auckland stakes increased
Special corrcs. Auckland The stake for the Inter-Island race for tight-class pacers at Alexandra Park next month has been increased by the Auckland Trotting Club from $lO,OOO to $11,350.
Announcing the rise, the secretary of the club IMr J. F. Patterson), said Mr Max Harvey had increased his sponsorship from $4OOO last year to $5OOO.
Run for the first time last season, the race is called the Max Harvey Inter-Island Challenge Stakes and is run oxer 2700 m from a mobile start.
Mr Harvey is a member of the club and his contributions stem from a desire to help p»oniote more interest in meetings at Alexandra Park.
It is planned to start 12 horses in the race. Including at le Ist five from the South Island. Horses finishing furl her back than fifth will each receive $l5O.
The Max Harvey event will be run on the first night of the October meeting on October 23.
The balance of the programme caters for two-year-old colts and geldings, three year-olds. C2, C 3, C4-C5. and C 6 and faster pacers, and C 3 and open class trotters. There is some doubt at present, according to Mr Patterson, whether the big trotting race on the second night. October 27, will continue to be called the Siers Travel Invitation Challenge Stakes.

‘•Discussions have been held concerning continuation of the sponsorship, but nothing definite has been decided.’*
If It is not sponsored, the race will be called the Invitation Challenge Trotting Stakes, and the stake will be $lO,OOO.
In the last two years. with sponsorship of $lOOO each l ine, Ihe race was worth SII.LOO.
Nominations will be accepted only from owners who receive an invitation to run their horses.
So far. only two invitations have been issued — to the South Island horses, Waipounamu and Nigel Craig.
The programme for the second night includes races for two-year-old fillies and four year-olds.
