Two-year-old fillies take the eye
Special corrcs. Hastings Two two-year-old fillies, one by Taipan II and one by Bahroona, took the eye among four winners at yesterday’s Hastings barrier trials.
The trial meeting was initially planned for last Monday but heavy rain last week caused the postponement. Certain parts of the track are still wet so it was derided to hold a meeting for two-year-olds and unraced maidens only. The distance for each race was 400 m. There was one heat for unraced maidens and three for two-year-olds.
Diana, a two-year-old filly by Taipan II out of Sharbon. looked particularly smart in winning her heat in 2B.«sec. This was the fastest of the three two-year-old heats. She galloped into the lead soon after the start and was well held to win by a length and a half from a Retained — Tangelo colt, with three lengths to Bhi e Image. Diana is out of a Bourbon Prince mare, making her the, same cross as last season's top Hastings filly Mop.
She is a well-built filly owned by the Napier Park Racing Club President. Mr Tobv Simmons, and trained by Colwyn Hercock. Goldroona. by Bahroona out of Goldsborough. was well held together by jockey Chris McNab when beating Rich Moon by half • length and the others by eight
lengths in another two-year-old heat.
Rich Moon was a minor place getter at the recent Foxton barrier trials but she had no answer for the less experienced Gold roona which won in the time of 29sec.
Goldroona has a very nice action and could become another good winner for Messrs W. Allison. R. E. and R. S. Arrowsmith and B. G. Collins. This partnership races the handy mare Hasty Arrow. SILVER FISH COLT The other two-year-old heat was won by another Hercock-trained youngster, Poisson Volant. He is a colt by Silver Fish out of Wild Court. The time for this heat, the slowest of the three, was 30 Isec. Poisson Volant won by three lengths from Fair Eulogy with a long neck to Sousa.
Fair Eulogy is a Sugar Apple filly owned afi’ii"trained by Frank Moughan and Sousa is a gelding by Bandmaster out of Morning Choice, trained by Don Sellwood. Aldonte, a gelding bv Sharivari out of Gaudine, ran the fastest time for the distance when winning the heat for unraced maidens.
He registered 28.4scc and beat Once Round, a gelding by Round Robin out of Pink Cave, by half a head, with Smudge threequarters of a length back third. I Aldonte is trained by Don Sellwood and is closely related to the former lop galloper, Feirainor.
