Chileans get jobs in N.Z.
A total of 127 Chilean refugees were provided with jobs in New Zealand in the year ended March 31.
This was revealed in the annual report of the Department of Labour, tabled in Parliament.
It said the resettlement of Chilean refugees was given priority, at the request of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. After the collapse of the South Vietnamese Government, 50 familes were admitted, the report said. Britain, and the Netherlands, were the principal sources of immigrants recruited under the subsidy scheme.
Migrants embarked under the scheme during the 12 months totalled 2662, comprising 2137 British, 461 Dutch, 31 other Western Europeans and 33 Americans.
Another 103 people were brought out under the assisted passage scheme.
