Visit to board ‘worth while’
The North Canterbury Hospital Board found the visit on Tuesday by the Minister of Health (Mr Gill) “worth while.”
Mr Gill was in Christchurch for talks with the board and to visit Sunnyside. Princess Margaret, and Christchurch Hospitals. At a finance committee meeting, the board’s chairman (Mr T. C. Grigg) said Mr Gill had explained the .Government’s position on finance. The board had explained to Mr Gil' it needs if it was to increase services to keep un with the growing population. The visit had been a “worth-while exercise.”
A letter from Mr Gill earlier, after the Budget, set out present limits on spending by hospital boards. The
(board was asked to hold spending to assist the Government in the present economic crisis.
In a further letter Mr Gill (acknowledged a statement 'prepared bv a board member, (Professor D W. Beaven. on j post-graduate overseas study ■ leave for senior medical i officers. Mr Gill assured the board i that when the economy j improved, he would do “all in his power” to arrange for more funds for overseas leave.
The board is still negotiating to use beds at St John of God Hospital on a contract system. Figures relating to the cost of the beds are awaited, and will be sent to the Department of Health for approval.
