Controversy about naming new tug
Shipping News
The naming of the latest |i addition to the Lyttelton , Harbour Board’s fleet has, like many such events, ) caused controversy. The addition is the SI.SM tug due for delivery early next year to coincide with the opening of Lyttelton’s container terminal. Earlier this month, the board’s port development committee was deadlocked, four votes all. on the choice between naming the tug ’ Godley or Purau. The deadlock was broken yesterday when a full meet-1 ing of the board voted 7-4 in favour of Godley. Traditionally, the board has named its tugs either Lyttelton or Canterbury, but the board’s chairman (Mr J. Brand) said yesterday that to avoid confusion a new name had been sought. However, in keeping with the names of the rest of the board's plant, the tug has been named after a geographical feature in the vicinity of the port. Godley Head.
