Heathcote tip approved
Heathcote County will be|< able to set up a 24-acre rub-P bish tip on the eastern bank! of the Heathcote River, but,' only under conditions set by i, the No. 2 Town and Country Planning Appeal Board. The site is upstream from a tip already run by the; county. It is needed during' the five years before a metropolitan Christchurch tipi is opened. In a recent decision, the appeal board rejected pro- ! tests from the Lyttelton Borough Council. Ecology: Action (Christchurch), Ltd. and the Combined Estuary | Association. The board said its con-‘
|ditions would make the esicape of contaminants from tthe tip “practically impossible.” A stopbank would I surround the entire flood area, and it would be fenced. When tipping is finished. I the site will be handed over to the Ferrymead Trust for development. That organisation owns the site. The appeal board chairi man (Mr W. J. M. Treadwell. :S.M.) said the presence of a tip for five years was “a 1 small price to pay for the recreational potential of this i area." Steps would be taken to 'prevent rubbish from blowing into the Heathcote River ‘Estuary.
