Inter-island ferry

Sir, — During the recent southerly storm, and also the one some weeks before, the Lyttelton ferry has been the only certain means of transport between the islands. Road and rail have been blocked by snow, aircraft by ice and wind, and Picton ferries cancelled. Admittedly the Rangatira was somewhat late arriving last Saturday, but was expertly handled and turned round and was back to time by Sunday night. This passenger service also connects some of the Railways best express services, e.g., the Southerner to the Endeavour. To remove a reliable and vital passenger link must surely amount to criminal folly. — Yours, etc., A. K. MOBBS. July 19, 1976.
