Strikes or tax

Sir, — R. W. H. Wade’s letter on July 16 contained laudable humanitarian suggestions, but I fear few would-be strikers would accept his proposition of a special tax to aid the African peoples. Neither would the majority of non-would-be strikers who, of laie, have become fed to the teeth with the arrogance of the black leaders, who appear to have developed political blackmail to a fine art. But perhaps R. W. H. Wade’s proposal is offered as a cap-in-hand sop to these leaders because New Zealand has been naughty in not doing as Mr Ordia ordered. Incidentally, I wonder how strong the trade union movement is in the black African countries? Would the black unionists — if any — be permitted to strike without fear of execution, or of being thrown into gaol, without trial? — Yours, etc., HARVEY FOSS, July 19, 1976.
