First pigeon success for Malzard

The Christchurch trainer, John Malzard, had his first success in three years of pigeon racing on Saturday when his bird won the Bob Charles Cook Strait Classic. Mr Malzard’s bird, owned by Mr Ken Webb of Whangarei, was clocked in at shr 31min for the 245 mile race from Levin to Christchurch. Its velocity was 1202 metres per minute, an average of approximately 44 m.p.h. Messrs Webb and Malzard shared prize money of $350 for the win — more than $3OOO was put up altogether for the classic — and won the Bank of NewSouth Wales Challenge Cup and Trophy for the win. Fanciers from all over NewZealand raced 805 young birds in the race and more than 600 of these finished on Saturday. The birds were liberated in Levin at 8 a.m. in fine southwest conditions and encountered varying winds, including strong north-westerlies over the final stages to Christchurch, over the long journey.
