Computer banks
Storage of personal information is a subject almost guaranteed to produce a strong emotional response, especially in this country where computer banks are a relatively new fact of life.
While controversy rages around the Wanganui bank, it must be noted that the U.S. Government has about 25,000 such centres crammed with information about the citizens of America and that in Britain, with the figure exceeding 13,000, the Home Office has recently pressed for legislation to safeguard individuals from the misuse of this data. In a 8.8. C. radio talk, Dr Joseph Hanlon of the National Council for Civil Liberties points out that few people are adequately aware of the dangers to personal privacy from the unbridled growth of computer data. He discusses this with Dr Bill Olle, an independent database management consultant. The discussion may be heard on the main programme on Friday evening.
