Anakiwa old boys plan marathon

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. A group of 200 young men and women who have attended the Cobham Outward Bound school at Anakiwa have organised a “boundathon” to raise $50,000 for renovations to the school. The money is needed for repairs to the school’s main block, which was built in 1928, and to buy a new truck, a larger jet boat, new launch, and an extra cutter to cope with courses which were recently increased from 56 to 70 people. The Outward Bound Association’s national president (Mr Tony Rhind) said that North Island members will run from Auckland to Wellington — starting on October 8 — and the South Island group will run from Christchurch to Timaru at the same time. Arrival time in both centres has to be October 12, so each runner will run only’ up to 10 miles, two miles at a time, to keep the speed up. The association has managed to get three prominent New Zealand sportsmen as honorary “boundathon” patrons — Murray Halberg, Jack Foster, and Bryan Williams — but as yet they won’t commit themselves to helping out with the running. The school has been running for 17 years.
