Small town’s reign of terror
“File it Under Fear," al TVI programme next Thurs-I day, is a thriller about the reign of terror in a small town which starts with the discovery of a strangled girl. ; This discovery is followed Iby another murder within a | week, and there are no I clues. I In the town’s library, life .goes on as usual but with |an increasingly ominous undertone. The librarian is Liz Morris (played by Maureeen Lipman), an introspective spinster whose assistant, George (played by Richard O’Callaghan), works resentfully’, feeling that he has insufficient responsi-j bility and that she should have the key to the library door. Helping them during her holidays is a girl student named Gillie (portrayed by Jan Francis). All are friendly with the attractive young shop assistant next-door, Betty (played by Jenny Quayle), who comes in every morning to; have coffee with them. (An- 1 other regular visitor is the; elderly, rather strange Mr ; Stubbs (played by John Lej Mesurier) who spends most; of his time reading in the I library. He is obviously a, lonely man. Finally there is another visitor, an American named Gerry Masters (portrayed by Richard Pendrey). The stage is set for the next mystery to baffle Police Inspector Cramer when the horrified Gerry Masters, walking through the park, discovers Betty’s body. He runs away. The reign of terror gath-: ers momentum as everyone! starts detective work of; their own and amateur, sleuths try to beat the police to solving the mysteries.
