Taranaki well looks hopeful
NEW PLYMOUTH, August 26. A third hydrocarbon-bearing layer has been encountered in the .Xevv Ply mouth .No. 1 well at Port Taranaki by the Republic Petroleum (Corporation.
The firm is finding further traces of oil and this morning it experience the biggest release of gas yet.
Gas bubbled to the surface with the drilling mud, whipping it into a froth. As the pressure dropped, the gas bubbles expanded. It is believed that the needle, on the hydrocarbon monitor on the mud flicked off the dial when the first cutting from the third level reached the surface.
The firm’s general manager (Mr G. W. West) said today that drilling entered the third zone late yesterday when the bit passed the 2840 ft mark. There were significant indications of hydrocarbons, which had continued at intervals over 750 ft. The well was drilling ahead at 2890 ft early this afternoon and apparently was still getting hydrocarbon shows. Drillers are aiming for a depth of 3200 ft. Mr West emphasised that
until the well was logged i: would not be possible to saj accurately just what was causing the latest hydrocarbon indications. Only' pro-duction-testing would indicate the volumes of hydrocarbons.
