Some Nelson logging contractors had been asked to consider going to Canterbury to help salvage windthrown trees, but no firm commitments had yet been made, the managing director of H. Baigent and Sons. Ltd (Mr B. W. Wall) said. It could be some time before Nelson companies could commit gangs to the territory, he said.
The Nelson Conservator of Forests (Mr P. W. Maplesden) said that no Forest Service gangs would work in Canterbury until a firm request for help was received.
