Settlement of claims
tjr.z. Frew Atioeiotion) WELLINGTON. All claims resulting from the storm in the South Island and lower North Island last month should be settled by the Earthquake and War Damage Commission within two months, the Minister in charge of the commission (Mr Connelly) said. Speaking during the debate on the Appropriation Bill, Mr Connelly said he believed 7000 to 8000 claims, amounting to s2m. had been received by the commission so far. Some claims were already being settled, and a significant number would be settled within a fortnight, he said. About 15 per cent of people who could insure their property had failed to take fire cover, and as a result were not covered by the Earthquake and War Damages Commission.
