Effluent project withdrawn

A project directed at improving effluent treatment at Canterbury freezing works, undertaken by the owners of the works, has had to be given up. The exercise, involving a pilot plant at the Belfast works of the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company, was supported by N.C.F. Kaiapoi Ltd, Thomas Borthwicks, the New Zealand Refrigerating Company, and Canterbury Bye Products Company Ltd. The superintendent engineer of the Canterbury Fro-

zen Meat Company, Mr R. W. Davies, said that the object had been to see whether improvements could be made to the existing effluent treatment by increasing the efficiency of fat and solids recovery. In practice, however, it had been found the improvements did not come up tc the hopes raised by laboratory scale tests. Future development work would have to be undertaken by the appropriate research groups, he said, as the companies concerned were not adequately equipped for such investigations.
