Lord Salter dies
Lord Salter, of Kidlington, one of the organisers of the convoy system to protect British shipping from German submarines in the two world wars, died in London on Friday after a two-month illness. He was 94. James Arthur Salter held senior posts at the Admiralty during the First World War. For many years he was a member of Parliament and in 1951-52 was Minister of State for Economic Affairs in the Government of Sir Winston Churchill. He was raised to the peerage in 1953. — London June 29.
