Redmond loses again

For the third time this season, Stuart Armstrono beat the top Canterbury table tennis lunlor, Harry Redmond, this time at the provincial lunlor championships. The diminutive Rlccarton player, who was the fifth seed for the under-21 singles, beat Redmond in straight games. Armstrong had previously beaten Redmond in one of their two matches at the Canterbury secondary schools championships and he eliminated him from the Canterbury junior winter tournament.

The final never reached great heights. Redmond was the aggressor in the first game and he recovered from 3-7 to 14-all. But Armstrong rallied to take the game, 21-17. Redmond tried to slow the pace in the second game, but Armstrong was unperturbed and established a 6-1 lead. Redmond again responded to the challenge and evened at 17all. He then carelessly served a fault and Armstrong gained the next two points with a good forehand on a Redmond error. Armstrong committed the sin of fault serving, but it did not matter as Redmond played a lazv shot to give Armstrong the title. The event lost much of its interest when the top seed, Graeme Rhind, suffered a recurrence of a pulled muscle in his shoulder and was forced to default his semi-final to Armstrong when they had won a game apiece. Rhind was also deprived of an almost certain victory in the mixed doubles and a probable win in the boys’ doubles. Stephen Adamson provided a feature of -the under-21 boys' singles with his wins over the third seed, Chris Gross, and sixth seed, Chris Waines. His winning run was halted in the semi-finals by Redmond whose variation unsettled Adamson. Jan Morris, who -won the women’s open. title on Saturaday evening, was in a class of her own in the girls’ under-21 grade. Her opponent, Ingrid Jagersma,

was frequently left stranded by the sharp hitting and changes of direction by Miss Morris. There was a further surprise in the under-18 boys’ doubles where Grant Wilson (Otago) and Richard Dixon, the fourth seed, beat the top pairing of Alistair and Stuart Armstrong in the semi-finals, and the second seeds, Redmond and Grant Foster, in the final. The under-18 and under-18 girls’ events were dominated by the talented Marlborough player, Debbie Looms. The nationally ranked junior won the maximum six titles.
