Olympic hid by vollevball

The first step in New i Zealand’s bid to compete in volleyball at the Montreal Olympic Games will be made at Melbourne from August 15 to 30.

The national men’s and women’s teams will be chosen at Queen's Birthdav week-end for the first Asian ’zone tournament. The zone ! represents an area from Israel east through the Pacific ;to the Americas. j Sixteen countries are exi pected to take part, ini eluding Japan, the Olvmpic champion, North and South ! Korea, China, the Philippines, and Israel.

! One team will qualify I from the Asian zone, although Japan has an auto- | matic place at Montreal. New Zealand’s chances of coming first or second are rated “about 20 per cent” bv ’ the men’s coach, Citrad Benacek.

The winners of each zone — North and South America, Africa and Europe are the others — will qualifv for the Olympics but there are second chances for both men and women: in Italy (men) and Germany (women).

Two teams from each of those tournaments will take the ninth and tenth places at Montreal.
