The economy

Sir, — The Prime Minister’s comment that he “kept the brakes off the economy to save jobs” shows economic and political naivetv. He over-estimates our importance as part of the world trading pattern. Our economy is like a cork in the tide of world trade, being washed in or out dependent on the economic policies of other countries. The brakes are being applied] here because of economic circumstance, not clever economic management. One wonders if the desire “to save jobs” is merely to please the unions and save face over political promises made to them. Many unions consider that what is good for the union is good for the country. The economy, firms and individuals are distressed by the lack of a strong lead. The future, Mr Rowling, will be worse than! had you had your brakes! attended to. — Yours etc., i R.M.B. | April 13. 1975.
