Shortage of flats
Sir, — Your article on current rents and accommodation shortages in Friday’s issue does you credit.. It highlights yet another of the present Government’s failures. Before the last election the Labour Party promised to attract back to New Zealand many of the tradesmen who had gone to Australia, and to build thousands of houses. Since then probably less than a dozen have returned to Labour’s Utopia and the housing position, has severely deteriorated. Most of the residential property built has been ownership flats built by private investors and property finance is virtually unobtainable. The housing problem has been worsened by the Government’s restrictions on property dealing and the Rent Appeal Boards must have caused many a tenant a belly laugh. — Yours etc., PROGS.
