Salmonella affects 13
Thirteen cases of salmonella, a type of food poisoning affecting the bowel, were reported in the Christchurch health district last week. Ten cases involved three families: five members of one, three of the second, and two of the third. The Medical Officer of Health (Dr ’L. J. Jepson) said yesterday that the main source of salmonella was meat, particularly chicken or other poultry, left too long out of a refrigerator or freezer, and insufficientlv cooked, or not cleaned properly in preparation for cooking.
Other notifiable diseases reported last week were two cases of infectious hepatitis, and one of hook-worm.
