FRAZIER TO TOUR
(N.Z. Press Association) MELBOURNE. Negotiations are under way for the American boxling heavyweight, Joe Frazier, to fight a series of short bouts in Australia and other Pacific centres following his ninth-round victory over Jimmy Ellis here yesterday. Joe Williams, of the fight promoters, Global Productions, of Seattle, Washington, said today it was planned for Frazier to fight a series of two or three-round bouts with sparring partner Stan Ward and New Zealand heavyweight champion, Mailee Haumona. Haumona, a Tongan-born boxer now based in Auckland, produced the upset of the day when he knocked out Ellis’s sparring partner, Vern Mclntosh, in the first round on yesterday’s bill. Williams and Frazier described Haumona as an outstanding prospect who, with proper training, could turn into a top-line heavyweight. The promoter said negotiations had begun to take the fighters to Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Tasmania, Port Moresby, Auckland and Tahiti.
