U.S. poverty studied
(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) WASHINGTON. A new poverty study by an arm of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States says that most Americans today can no longer afford an . average home, and that the basic cause of poverty in the country is “the powerlessness of the people over their political and economic institutions.” “The richest 10 per cent of the population receives the same total income as the bottom 50 per cent, and the top 1. per cent receives more income than the bottom 20 per cent,” the report says. “In the present economic situation, the average American can no longer afford the average American home.”
The study, to, be published in February by the Roman Catholic Campaign for Human ' Development, says that more than half of all Americans are essentially dependent upon social institutions over which they have no control.
