Leading softball team crushed

Burnsida caused a major upset on Saturday when it crushed the previously unbeaten Monowai women's softball team, 14-2, in the senior competition. In the other matches, Christ-church-West won by a large margin against United, and Western Suburbs scored three runs in its last innings to beat Aorangi 18-15 in a high scoring game. Results were:— Burnside 14, Monowai 2. Christchurch-West 13, United 2. Western Suburbs 18, Aorangi , 15.

Burnside v. Monowai After a scoreless first innings for both sides, Burnside took control of the game in its second with strong batting by R. Storer, K. Norcliffe, M. Sutherland. K. Noonan, E. Seager and a home run by R. Happi. This resulted in an incredible nine runs, a blow Monowai had little hope of recovering from.

In its next two innmgs Monowai failed to score, while Burnside, scoreless in its third, added four more runs in its fourth with Storer, M. Kilburn and S. Carroll prominent.

Monowai scored its only runs in its fourth innings with B. Makinson and N. Beale making home after a good hit by the latter.

Storer added one more run in Burnside’s fifth innings and when Monowai failed to score the game ended. The pitching of Storer, who faced 21 batters and had eight strike outs, was a large factor in her side’s win.

Christchurch-West v. United Christchurch started well with M. Lee, tile first batter, and L. Watts scoring runs. It continued its onslaught with seven runs in its second innings witli S. Constable, Watts, Wyatt and C. Quested all batting well Four more runs were added in the third innings but Christchurch was scoreless in its fourth and fifth innings United, however, was unable to score in its first five innings and the game ended at that point. United’s poor showing was mainly due to the pitching of M. Rhodes who faced 18 batters and gained three strike outs.

Western Suburbs v. Aorangi Each team started calmly with a run each in their first innings, but in their second innings a complete change came over the game with Western scoring seven runs and Aorangi nine. Western regained the lead in its third innings, forceing errors, to score four runs while Aorangi was kept scoreless for two innings. N. Harvey added one more for Western in its fourth bat. Western added two more runs in its fifth innings and Aorangi did likewise, and then with Western unable to add to its total in the sixth innings, Aorangi tied the game with three runs. S. Stewart, first batter for Western in its last bat, hit a home run, and she was followed in the same innings by G. Clark and V. Gage. In spite of desperate efforts, Aorangi could not make up the leeway in the final innings. Soccer. — Switzerland beat Portugal, 3-0, at Berne, and Czechoslovakia and Poland drew, 2-2.* ]at Prague, in friendly Signing.— T. McDermott, the 22-year-old England under 23 soccer midfield player, has isigned for Liverpool from Newcastle United for $302,000.
