Policemen injured in mob attack
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 14 Five policemen were injured in two clashes with large groups of young men in Wellington early yesterday morning.
Fence palings were used .against three policemen, who needed hospital treatment afterwards. Two constables suffered head injuries, and a sergeant suffered a broken bone in one hand.
They had answered a call about 12.40 a.m. to attend a noisy party at a house in Hopper Street, near the 'southern end of Taranaki I Street. | As they were leaving, a (fight broke out, and people 'from the party stripped pairings from a fence to use as ■; weapons. d A police cadet in the patrol's car saw his colleagues outnumbered by up to 60 persons and radioed for assistance. I men were involved in a fight a with about 30 young men. Detective Constable M. J. Bardsley and Constable A. R. Kinnane, of the C.1.8.’s car squad, had been questioning two men about their actions in respect of cars parked in [the area. I The men ran off, and then returned with nearly 30 ;others, and the two policemen were punched in the face; and body. When a C. 1.8. car arrived, the men made off. The police car’s crew ar-' rested one of them, and the two car-squad policemen chased the group and arrested four.
