Mr HAY MAYOR IN TEN DAYS
Mr H. G. Hay will probably become Mayor of Christchurch on Wednesday, October 23. He cannot legally take office until the Wednesday after an official declaration is made of the result of the election last Saturday. The declaration depends on the checking of all voting papers (more than 51,000 of them), the acceptance or otherwise of special votes, and a final count of all eligible votes. The declaration will probably be made in about a week.
It is unlikely that the final vote will make any difference to the outcome of the: Mayoral contest; if anything,: Mr Hay will increase his! election-night lead. Once he takes office, Mr Hay will have to decide on the date of the inaugural meeting of the new council, and this is likely to be November 4. At this meeting the chairmanship and constitution of the council’s working committees will be decided, but there will not be a normal meeting of the council until December 16.
A team of more than 40 counters, including some permanent council staff, but most temporary staff, are sorting and counting the votes. The final counts for all the election, including; those for ad hoc bodies.’ should be available in 10 : days. i
