Fat fire in restaurant

i About 15 persons left their • meals hurriedly when fat jcaught fire in a vent in the Guardsman restaurant, Armagh Street, about 9.45 p.m. yesterday. The fire started while a icook was frying steaks under the vent. Flames spread to an accumulation of old fat inside the vent. The restaurant quickly j filled with smoke, and the fire I brigade had to use a smoke 1 extractor for about 30 minutes to clear the air. Five fire engines turned out to the original call, and two others from suburban stations went to the restaurant after fire alarms in other parts of the building were triggered off. The restaurant manager, Mr F. J. H. Visser, said no damage had been caused, and lunch would be served as usual today.
