Games film
Sir, — Unlike A. P. Bar- i rett, I enjoyed the Commonwealth Games film i immensely. The colour photography is consistently 1 fine and the slow motion i sequences are superb. By imaginatively bringing to- i gether apparently unrelated ; episodes the “feel” of the ' Games is well conveyed. Attention is rightly given to ; those behind the scenes, and to athletes who were unsuccessful as well as to the winners. The only aspect of the film which grated was the rather pretentious, quasiphilosophical narration which seemed to be grafted on in a clumsv attempt to prove “artistic merit”. Statements : such as, “athletes wish to perform, therefore the act is valid,” were not necessary; jthe actions, as recorded on: I film, spoke for themselves. ! Congratulations to the I I National Film “Unit also for
“Children of the Mist,’ [ which was screened before the Games film. — Yours etc. DAVID GREEN. October 12, 1974. Sir, — I would be grateful if you would publish this disclaimer indicating 'that the writer is not your correspondent, A. P. Barrett, whose letter, criticising the film of the 1974 British Commonwealth Games produced by the National Film Unit and entitled “Games 74,” was printed in your edition of October 12. — Yours A. W. BARRETT, Executive Secretary, 1974 British Commonwealth Games, Organising Committee. October 12, 1974.
