British elections

Sir, — The outcome of the British elections proves how unfair their democracy is. Their elected representatives cannot possibly reflect the preferences of the electors. Some 40 per cent of the 72.4 per cent who took the trouble to vote were all who supported the leading party. This means that under 30 per cent of those entitled to vote, have succeeded in electing a Government. Had there been a second choice on the ballot paper, a far better and fairer result would have ensued. Their system and ours are loaded against the smaller parties. It is rotten and needs correction. — Yours etc. E. J. FREEMAN. October 12, 1974.
