TROTTING Regular race trials for Addington
Form shown at regular race and barrier trials to be held almost every week by the three clubs racing at Addington Raceway will be used as a guide at the selection of fields for totalisator meetings on the course.
The clubs intend running the trials each Wednesday, starting next week, said the secretary-manager of the three clubs (Mr D. C. Parker) yesterday. However, this will depend on the response from owners and trainers, he said.
In some weeks the trials will have to be changed to another day because of midweek race meetings, Mr Parker said. It is intended to run a 10race programme each Wednesday. starting at 1 p.m. and finishing at 4 p.m.. with races run at 20-minute intervals. Entries will be taken the day before each meeting. The clubs reserve the right to decide when sufficient entries have been received and to decline further entries, and to run less than 10 events if insufficient entries
are received. The clubs intend to cater for all classes of pacers and trotters, and the first set next Wednesday will be run over 2000 metres. Races in which the mobile barrier will be used will be included in later programmes.
In the meantime it is not intended to cater for two-year-old pacers, but these will be included in later programmes closer to the time when there are totalisator races for these horses. The Canterbury Trotting Owners and Breeders Association will continue to run qualifying trials for both pacers and trotters and, probably, events for two-year-old pacers. RESULTS SUPPLIED
Other clubs will be supplied with the results of races at the trials, and it is hoped that the form shown at Addington will be used when fields are being selected for totalisator events.
The trials run by the clubs will give B-class maiden pacers the opportunity to graduate to A class as a result of wins, while the form shown by A class
horses should prove of benefit to the public when totalisator events are run for this class as form should be fairly well disclosed. The decision of the clubs to run regular trials for all classes was reached after discussions with representatives of the horsemen and owners and breeders, who are going to assist in staffing the meetings. This will also, keep the ordinary trials run by owners and breeders organisations within reasonable bounds, j Frequently in the past few) years programmes of more: than 20 events for qualifying
horses and two-year-olds have been common, with the result that horses on open assessments have been unable to obtain racing at trials.
Last spring there were only occasional races for the better - class horses, with the result that most of them started at totalisator meetings without the benefit of trials.
In theory the majority of horses racing at totalisator meetings will be in top racing condition as a result of experience at trials. This should be invaluable, particularly in the spring.
