Meeting on sugar beet

Recent increases in sugar prices might have strengthened the case of the Mid-Canterbury Sugar Beet Committee which will meet the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Moyle) in Wellington tomorrow.

Members of the deputation said yesterday that the sugar price rise was an indication of the country’s need for some self-sufficiency in the industry. The industry proposed by the committee would initially supply all the South Island requirements. It has been accepted by the Government as a viable financial pronosition. Members of the committee met Mr Moyle in May last

year and since then have made investigations requested by the Minister.

Circulars were sent to every farmer in the area and although only a very small percentage of farmers returned them . they showed that the required 10,000 acres was available.

It is thought that a factory would cost abput $l2 million to establish.

It could take five to six years to get the industry under way and during this time New Zealand’s sugar consumption is expected to rise an average of 4000 to 5000 tons a year.
