Population and aid

Sir,—Professor K. F. O’Connor, as reported on May 16, avoids the issue by linking the population growth problem in underdeveloped countries with the injustices of economic exploitation of these countries by the rich. Overpopulation is a global problem and zero growth must be the target of rich and poor alike if the human race is to avoid being overwhelmed by its own numbers. An important part of the aid package offered to underdeveloped nations should be assistance to curb population growth if they request such aid. Without such aid many poor countries will make little progress in overcoming their problems of malnutrition and starvation or increasing the standard of living of their people. As well as, 1 : economic justice for the de-1 veloping nations, humanity, shares a common interest in l conserving the world's re-| maining resources.—Yours etc., L. F. J. ROSS. May 16, 1974.
