Camp site rates

Sir,—lt is discouraging to read that the Ashley County Council intend to burden the Boys Brigade still further bv charging full rates for its Waipara camp site. No rubbish collection, no water supply or sewage disposal are provided for these rates which are more than the average farmer pays. The Boys Brigade exists to train boys to become self-dis-ciplined, well-balanced, individual men. Part of the process involves living away from their normal environment. A suitable camp site, complying with all health regulations and building bylaws is required. Organising, building and fund raising for this have been an additional load on voluntary officers. It is the last straw when the elected community administration demands of a voluntary community service full rates, and then when asked for assistance hides behind the legal situation. Surely the voluntary officers responsible deserve fairer consideration than this apparent $330 per annum slap in the face.—Yours etc.,

P. H. BEAUMONT.
