Six die in fire

Six persons died in a fire which swept through two adjoining houses in the Clapham area of London this morning. Firemen wearing breathing apparatus found the six bodies in various parts of the houses, which had been divided into flats. Geraldo, the son of a London tailor who became one !of Britain’s leading bandleaders in the 1930 s and 19405, has died at the age of 69. He was on holiday in Switzerland with his wife, Manya, when he suffered a fatal heart attack. Named Gerald Bright, he began o learn to play the piano at the age of six. He began to play professionally as an accompanist for silent films. He then played in orchestras on transatlantic liners. Widespread recognition came after he formed his own tango band, after a trip to Brazil.—London, May 6.
