Objection by association

The Combined Estuary Association has added its objection to the opposition of a mounting list of Sumner residents to the building of a multi-storey apartment block on the Esplanade. The group said yesterday that it was a retrograde step to put up high-rise buildings anywhere along the foreshore, or in any area zoned R 3. It urged a search for a better alternative.

High-rise buildings on the foreshore would destroy the natural beauty and charm of the Esplanade, and ran completely contrary to the aims of the organisation—to preserve and protect the environment, said Mr D. Watson, the group’s secretary. Mr Watson said the association added its protest because the Sumner Residents’ Association was one of its members.
