The New Zealand Amateur Swimmine: Association is continuing with plans to hold the Pacific Bowl swimming, diving, and water-polo tournament in Christchurch early next year, although the proposed New Zealand Games might be held then.
I Invitations to the 26 counj tries eligible to attend the tournament will be sent within 10 days, said the chairman of the Swimming Association council (Mr M. R. Duckmanton) yesterday. The association has set tentative dates for the fourdav carnival at Queen Elizabeth II Park. They are Januarv 30 and 31, and February 1 and 2—Thursday through to a Sunday. “If we wait to see when; the games are being held, we, might lose the ground wej have made.” Mr Duckmanton said. “We must get into; gear now.” A meeting will be held on: Saturday between organisa- j tions likely to be concerned with the staging of the New' Zealand Games. Mr Duckmanton said that sub-committees were being: formed for the organisation l of the aquatic tournament J and now the association had gone so far, it had to keep I the organisation “rolling.” j PACIFIC BOWL If the New Zealand Games; j became a reality, the touma-! ment could be incorporated,! he said. There were few inter-' national meetings in the' world which New’ Zealand, could attend at a reasonable} cost. If the Pacific Bowl!
(tournament became an annual event —as is proposed j—it could become a step-‘ping-stone for improving the i international status of countries taking part. INTERNAL TOURS Countries being represented in New Zealand could 'be offered internal tours : after the event, and this 'would expose more New Zeaj land swimmers to top-class ! swimming. I Among the countries to be ! invited are Australia, the United States, Canada, I Japan, and Russia. I Australia and Canada indicated their interest to Mr ! Duckmanton when he was | with the New Zealand team lat the Coca-Cola international tournament in i Leeds last month.
