Games rep. injured

Jacob Schriek, the Commonwealth Games cyclist, was knocked unconscious and admitted to Christchurch Hospital after he was involved in an accident with a car at Tai Tapu last evening. Schriek, aged 20, was road training on the Akaroa highway near the Tai Tapu golf course when a car approached from behind and the accident occurred. The car failed to stop. Schriek was thrown from his bicycle and was not found until about 15 minutes after, about 6.45 p.m., by a passing motorist. He was taken by ambulance to Christchurch Hospital with back and head injuries, and was in a comfortable condition last evening. A police patrol could find no sign of paint on the bicycle to help trace the car. Schriek is a policeman. He represented New Zealand in the 1000 m time trial at the Commonwealth Games, and was recently named "track cyclist of the vear” by the New Zealand Cycling Association.
