Tai Tapu effluent disposal problem
Now that Tai Tapu had a high-pressure water supply available, the staff was concerned about the health hazard that might arise if approval was given to install septic tanks, said the County Engineer (Mi’ J. D. Annan) at a meeting of the Paparua County Rural District Council yesterday.
“We are sorry to be l pressed for more subdivision and development, and these new’ houses will want septic tanks,” he said. “Sewers 'would be uneconomic.” Mr Annan said the Regional Water Board was of the opinion that each new, and all the existing houses discharging effluent which
might reach underground water should apply for rights to discharge. If more subdivision were allowed, with septic tanks, 'this would lead to an out-! break of infectious disease,! such as had occurred at' Oaklands, said Mr Annan. He was asked to investigate again the economics of a sewerage system. Ridings— The County Council was recommended to agree to the amalgamation of the Ladbrooks and Broadfields ridings. The chairman (Cr A. Y. Shuker)! said that Cr A. L. Coleman (Broadfields) would be leaving the district, and would not be available for re-elec-tion in October. Cycle Track —As the cost wou'd be $13,000, the council was unable to provide a cycle track on Sparks Road, said Cr Shuker. Cr J. S. Bisphan said that he had counted 25 and 21 schoolchildren on bicycles using [the road.
