Works men upset
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 29. Killing at the Westfield freezing works stopped this morning after chamber hands considered the findings of a committee of inquiry into a claim associated with container loading.
The chamberhands met, and then the rest of the Auckland Freezing Works Union members walked out with them.
The union president (Mr F. E. Barnard) said the stoppage was in protest against members’ being informed of the findings by news media, rather than by union officials. Although the news media received a copy at the weekend union officials had to go to the office of the committee’s chairman this morning to pick one up—after they heard that the findings had been made public.
The men may resume normal work tomorrow. The Minister of Labour (Mr Watt) says he cannot under-
stand the reason for the walk-out.
Mr Watt said tonight that the report was posted to
union officials and the company from his office last Wednesday and was embargoed against publication in the news media until today. The only reason he could see for the union’s hot receiving a copy quickly was the intervention of Anzac Day. Mr Watt said he apologised to the union if it did not receive the report before the newspapers.
