More talks on wheat

The Minister of Trade and Industry (Mr Freer) will reconsider the position of wheatgrowers in the light of further information given to him on Wednesday. The chairman of the Dominion agriculture produce section of Federated Farmers (Mr J. D. Simpson) and the chairman of the wheatgrowers’ sub.-section of Federated Farmers (Mr J. H. Mitched) met the Minister. Representatives of the Wheat Board were also present. Wheatgrowers’ representatives a month ago suggested additional financial aid for growers of wheat harvested this year because of the difficult climatic conditions and also to stimulate the flow of wheat into mills.

The Minister was given information collected through members of the electoral college of United Wheatgrowers and at meetings of provincial agriculture sections of Federated Farmers about what is happening on farms to wheat grown in the 1973-74 season. Mr Mitchell said after the meeting that severe sprouting of wheat was not as extensive as at first thought. The impression also had ben gathered that sowings of wheat for the 1974-75 season would be down again on the. previous season.

The Minister is expected to report back soon.
