Noted heart surgeon dies
(Neto Zealand Press Association) . AUCKLAND, April 28. Sir Douglas Robb, a distinguished Auckland surgeon and educationist, died at his home in Auckland on Saturday, on the eve of his seventy-fifth birthday.
A pioneer in heart surgeryjin New Zealand. Sir Douglas Robb was instrumental in establishing the national heart unit at Green Lane Hospital, where, in 1948, he
introduced the “blue baby” operation for remedying a congenital heart defect. Sir Douglas Robb was an outspoken medical reformer, and as early as 1947 he was advocating such advanced concepts as health centres, regional health boards, and post-graduate training for doctors.
He was knighted in 1960, and the next year he was made president of the British Medical Association and Chancellor of Auckland University.
He was a driving force behind the expansion of the university during the 19605, and it was largely because of his efforts that the Auckland Medical School was established.
Sir Douglas Robb is survived by his wife, and his three children.
