Lease for society

I The University Savings and Investment Society has been ’granted lease of the space occupied by the Student Union shop at Ham. The University Council desided to grant the lease yesterday after several members spoke against a recommendation from the executive committee that the lease be approved. Mr D. W. Bain opposed the leasing of premises to the society. Hp knew nothing of the capital, control, constitution, or the appointment or election of directors of the society. Mr Bain said that he did not approve of the leasing of subsidised building space to a private organisation. The Chancellor (Mr J. N. Matson) said that, although the society’s venture might be unwise and undesirable, the lease should be approved. “If students want to cut. their own throats then let them,” ■he said. The Vice-Chancellor (Professor N. C. Phillips) said that he was satisfied with the project. ~
