Yachting trophy won by Burgess and McGregor

A. Burgess and K. McGregor, in' their Jollyboat, Calypso, I achieved a notable double by ; gaining fastest time and first position on handicap in the PeI gasus Bay Trophy yacht race . on Sunday afternoon. The trophy event was a feature of a very successful regatta held by the Christchurch Yacht Club durinj the weekend. A ' record entry of nearly 100 boats and crews took part, the only disappointing aspect being the ilack of steady breezes on eithei I day. There was a quite anonymous (nature to the main placings in !the Pegasus Bay Trophy contest I Three of the next four — both in order of crossing the finishing line and on corrected times — were unnamed boats, the new Javelin of C. White and L. Thurlow and the 470 s sailed by G. S. and S. J. Mander and N. and G. England. ; Burgess and McGregor had just over 2min to spare from C. J. Hensley, a catamaran skipper who has enjoyed a most successful season. The Manders, uncle and nephew, were third to-com-plete the course but they, and White and Thurlow, moved ahead of Hensley in the handicap calculations. The England brothers had been 23see in front of the Manders in their division of the open water championships earlier in the day, but the Manders has an advantage of almost 2min in the trophy race. The wind faded over the later stages of the event and only 12 of the 57 starters finished within the time limit. Only 2sec separated the first two R class crews at the end of the Canterbury dinghy championship for the Cyrus Williams Cup. The former multiple provincial title-holder, A. W. Shields, and Iris for’ard hand, J. Smith, just managed to beat P. Hoskin and K. Welsh, with a gap of 2min to R. Ineson and I. Le Page. B. G. de Thier had 3(lsec to spare over B. E. Treleaven, with A. McFarlane creditably placed another llsec behind, at the end of the second-to-last heat of the Canterbury Finn class series, and beat Treleaven again — this time by a deceptive IDmin in drifting conditions — in the afternoon, when the time limit expired before any other helsmeti could finish. The last two races tor the Canterbury P class championship were won by C. Roberts, but the outcome of one of these events is still subject to protest. The provincial J.C. title programme was also completed, line honours being shared by E. L. Snowden and B. Cowan. Results:— . Pegasus ■ Bay Trophy (57 started): Calypso, Jollyboat (A. Burgess and K.
