Cylinder exploded
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. A 17-year-old youth took a container of oxy-acetylene gas, lit a fuse to it, and threw it over a cliff at a beach, the Papakura Magistrate’s Court was told.
Before Mr T. R. Gilles, S.M., was Andrew Graham Cryer, a farm assistant, who admitted the charge of possessing an explosive without lawful reasonable or sufficient purpose at Cashmore’s Beach on March 16. He was remanded until March 28 on bail for a probation report and sentence. Sergeant A. M. Fyfe said that on March 16 Cryer and some friends went to the beach for a barbecue. Cryer went to his car and took out a container of oxy-acetvlene gas. He lit the fuse on the container and threw it over a nearby cliff. The heavy explosion woke a number of residents who called the police. When spoken to by police, Cryer said he had been experimenting with explosives for some time, but said he had no malicious intent in throwing the container.
