P.M. defends pay rises

(N.Z. Press Association) RAROTONGA, March 24. The Prime Minister (Mr Kirk) had discovered in his years in Parliament that there is never a suitable time to adjust the salaries of M.P.s, he said in Rarotonga yesterday.

The Prime Minister said that criticism of the increases was very interesting. He denied saying at a press conference that the higher payments would not be made. What he had said was that the decision would be postponed.

None of the critics had mentioned that members of Parliament had taken cuts in salaries in previous years, or that a Royal Commission had recommended higher salaries.
