Bruce Hotel application

An application for a licence for the Bruce Hotel at Akaroa is expected to be made shortly to the Licensing Control Commission. The hotel has been closed since January, 1972, when its provisional licence was cancelled by the commission.

The hotel was almost totally destroyed by fire in 1962 and operated after that on a temporary bar licence. The commission granted a number of reprieves before it finally cancelled the licence.

Mr R. A. White, of Blenheim, bought the hotel a year ago, intending to build a 100-bed hotel on the site. The inability of previous owners to get finance for extensions and improvements to the hotel handicapped them in keeping the hotel licence.
