By-election at Sockburn
j Messrs D. R. Sorensen and) D. E. Mcßae were the sue-; Icessful candidates in an elec-! ition to fill vacancies on the! I Sockburn County-Borough Council. A postal ballot conducted by the Paparua County Council closed at 5 p.m. yesterday and gave Mr Sorensen 415 votes and Mr Mcßae 324. The unsuccessful candidates were Messrs T. N. Davey (312), A. M. Rhodes (284), and J. S. Fountain (271). There were 10 informal votes. There were not enough special votes to affect the provisional result, the assistant county clerk (Mr B. Mooar) said last evening. The poll of 42 per cent of the electors was regarded as satisfactory for a by-election. The election was necessary because of the resignations of Messrs D. Hampton and! | A. C. McEwen. (V.4.C. Games traffic Many records were broken! at the 1974 Commonwealth[ Games, not the least of which ' was by National Airways! which in the period from January 12 to February 5! handled 51.718 passengers; arriving and departing; through Christchurch. Of this total 26,692 passengers were; arrivals. A total of 813 aircraft, including charters, | were used to cope with the | traffic. An airline spokesman; in Christchurch said yester-| day that the passenger dens-' ity in the four weeks far ex-1 ceeded anything ever[ achieved by N.A.C. at Christ-1 church before; it was un-1 likely to be bettered for I many years, he added.
