Crown buys island
(N.Z. Press Association WELLINGTON, Jan. 30. The Crown has bought Motukawanui, the largest island in the Cavalli group, off the Northland coast. The previous owner was an American who bought the island in 1967. The Acting Minister of Lands (Mr Faulkner) said today he was particularly pleased to have the island back in the hands of New Zealanders. "The Cavallis are very popular with the boating public and I can see this island playing a very important recreational role in the future,” Mr Faulkner said. The 354-hectare (876-acre) island has safe beaches and anchorages. It was proposed, the Minister said, soon to have it gazetted as a recreation reserve.
