Ring-in joins bellringers
The Cathedral bellringers had an unexpected addition to their team when they rang two peals during the Royal procession through the inner city yesterday afternoon. Mr D. Sturtridge, a Cornishman, and seaman in H.M.S. Jupiter, a frigate in the Royal Fleet auxiliary, offered his services to the team.
He said yesterday that he was a bellringer in his home town, and often made a practice of visiting cathedrals during his voyages to join in training sessions.
His anval at the belltower yesterday afternoon was opportune; the team was still in the process of being assembled.
All 10 bells rang yesterday in the two peals — a Grandsire Triple (224 changes) and the Plain Bob Major (112 changes). Neither of the peals has any connection with Royal occasions.
